Japanese Architecture: Traditional Skills and Natural Materials

Hyokeikan Gallery December 24, 2020 (Thu)-February 21, 2021 (Sun)

The exhibition Japanese Architecture: Traditional Skills and Natural Materials features architectural models from our exhibition of Japanese antiquities held on the occasion of Tokyo 1964 Olympics, as well as those created by ACA to examine the styles and skills employed in the historical buildings designated as national treasures or important cultural properties prior to their restoration, with the aim of transmitting the traditional craftsmanship.

New Year's Celebration at the Tokyo National Museum

2021 is the Year of the Ox. To celebrate the New Year, we will hold a thematic exhibition featuring works of art with ox motifs, display selected masterpieces, and more. On January 2nd and 3rd, traditional Japanese events, such as drum performances and lion dances, will also be held. Have a wonderful start to the New Year at the Tokyo National Museum!

Highlights of Chinese Sculpture in the TNM Collection

Featuring some of the more rarely exhibited works in the Museum’s collection, this thematic exhibition presents a fresh look at Chinese sculpture as it traces its development from early, minimalistic tomb figures to more naturalistic Buddhist sculpture of later periods.

This exhibition sheds light on part of Hyokeikan’s construction process mainly through relevant extant material, which includes the building’s basic architectural plans such as floor plans, elevations, and cross sections, as well as photographs.

The Story of Chinese Art Collectors; Takashima Kaian and Others

In this joint exhibition, The Tokyo National Museum and the Taito City Museum of Calligraphy present paintings and calligraphy from the Takashima Kaian (1866–1943) and Nakamura Fusetsu (1875–1969) Collections, which are both based on earlier private and court collections of the Qing dynasty.

Here at the Tokyo National Museum, you can get in touch with Japanese culture through items created and treasured by people since long ago. These items are now called “cultural properties.” Japanese Culture Unlocked: Armor, Kimonos, Lacquerware, and Woodblock Printing is an interactive exhibition that allows you to experience the appeal and joy of cultural properties with four different themes: ukiyo-e woodblock prints, lacquerware, kimonos, and samurai armor.
