Issued by the Ministry of Civil Administration, this document certified the appointment of Priest Enchin (posthumus name: Chisho Daishi) as an attendant monk who would serve the emperor at Court. This document, on which Chinese-style characters were skillfully written, was specially prepared as Enchin’s identification for his visit to Tang China. Together with other documents related to Enchin, it was passed down through the ages at Onjoji temple in Shiga prefecture.
