The coronavirus pandemic and accompanying social crisis have brought about radical and unprecedented changes in the way we live our lives. The trial and error of lockdowns in cities around the world, border restrictions, and other preventive measures against the virus, which have led to the closure and postponement of museum exhibitions, have forced museums around the world to think about the post-lockdown museum.
In light of this situation, we have decided to hold our international symposium completely online. The title of the FY2020 Program will be “Creating a Global Museum Community through Arts of Japan --- Challenges in the era of with/post-COVID-19”.

The symposium presents the visions of how museums will continue to operate, and the significance of Japanese art research and the dissemination of research results, in this situation.

There will be two major themes. First, presenters will discuss how their approach to Japanese art has or has not changed due to the restrictions of movement across borders. The second theme is presenting Japanese art online with digital data. During the museum closures caused by lockdowns, museums around the world have produced many videos and other online productions accessible through their website and social media platforms like YouTube. Presentations will reveal the advantages and disadvantages of the online content created by their museums, such as online exhibitions and gallery talks.

Many people continue to be infected with the novel coronavirus, and the future remains unclear. For this reason, we would like to think about what we can do through arts of Japan, about the possibilities and future of museums in this symposium, and make these discussions available around the world.
