Deceptively simple in appearance, tea scoops are thought to reflect the personalities of their makers. This scoop was carved by the samurai warlord Gamō Ujisato (1556–95), a leading pupil of the tea master Sen no Rikyū (1522–91). The tip has a sharp bend, which some believe is a reflection of Ujisato's steely warrior spirit.
