Series Japanese Natural History : Japanese Boats and Ships / Japanese Gallery (Honkan) Room 16   February 27, 2007 (Tue) - April 22, 2007 (Sun)

Boats of the Shogun, Compiled by the Museum Bureau, Meiji period, 19th century(Gift of Mr. Tokugawa Muneyoshi, On exhibit through March 25, 2007)

Surrounded by the sea, the Japanese have benefited from sea transportation for a long time. Few boats remain from the ancient times other than excavated wrecks, but paintings and other historical materials tell the form and role of ships over time. The display will introduce the history of Japanese ships through historical materials, from sea boats of the Kamakura period to the Edo period vessels for the shogun and feudal lords, together with trading ships, fishing boats, and boats cast ashore.
