Merrymaking under Blossom Trees (detail), By Kano Naganobu, Edo period, 17th century (National Treasure)
Japanese Gallery (Honkan) Room 2
March 12, 2019 (Tue) - April 7, 2019 (Sun)
Highlights of this painting include the group of women gracefully performing a folk dance and their exquisite garments featuring the latest designs of the time. With the surrounding objects―a pavilion, trees, curtains in the foreground, and the rock in the center―skillfully arranged, the overall composition creates the effect of looking at two amphitheaters. These two screens also create two contrasting scenes of merrymaking: one with stillness and the other with motion.
