This year marks 150 years since the death of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, an ukiyo-e artist active in the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. In connection to this, two exhibitions will be held in this gallery, mainly of works by Kuniyoshi. Exhibits currently on display focus on depictions of people, including warrior pictures and bijinga portraits of beautiful women, as well as prints from the series that made Kuniyoshi famous, One Hundred and Eight Heroes from the Chinese Tale, The Water Margin. Also on display are folding screens with images from in and around Kyoto, which are considered the precursors of ukiyo-e, as well as bijinga by Suzuki Harunobu and Kitagawa Utamaro.
