This is one of a series of overseas exhibitions organized by the Agency of Cultural Affairs which is being shown domestically on the occasion of its return. This exhibition (held at the British Museum, UK; Thursday, September 10 - Sunday, November 22, 2009) showcases dogu clay figurines, which are known as representations of the spiritual world and the belief of Japan's ancient Jomon people. This is a rare opportunity to see the most important works of this genre, including three National Treasures.

This major retrospective of Hasegawa Tohaku will cover a wide range of his paintings beginning with his early works from his hometown of Nanao, to the numerous masterpieces, which he painted in Kyoto under the name Tohaku and which adorned many famous Kyoto temples. Delicate yet bold. Quiet yet powerful. Tohaku's masterpieces and the human drama that led to their creation will be presented in commemoration of this artist who lived 400 years ago.

* National Treasure Pine Trees (Tokyo National Museum), National Treasure Maple Tree and National Treasure Pine Tree and Autumn Plants (Chishaku-in Temple, Kyoto) will be on view during the entire period of exhibition in both Tokyo and Kyoto.

The Eisei Bunko Foundation and the Eisei Bunko Museum were established in 1950 by 16th-generation family head Hosokawa Moritatsu, with the objective of preserving for future generations the legacy of the cultural treasures of the Hosokawa family, lords of the former Kumamoto domain.
This exhibition presents renowned works from the Eisei Bunko collection, along with a selection of objects related to the Hosokawa family. In addition to highlighting the history of the Hosokawa family and the transmission of traditional Japanese culture, it also offers insight into the personal character and connoisseurship of Hosokawa Moritatsu, one of the leading art collectors of modern Japan.

Honkan  Japanese Gallery
Enjoy the beauty of Japanese art.
Chronological exhibitions, "Highlights of Japanese Art", on the second floor provide a general overview of Japanese art history. Genre Gallery on the first floor consists of exhibitions devided by types of works, such as sculpture, ceramics, and laquerware.
Toyokan  (Closed)
Toyokan is closed due to earthquake-proof construction work.
Toyokan will open around 2012.
Heiseikan  Japanese Archaeology
In the Archaeology Gallery, visitors can view the Japanese history through the Archaeological objects from several thousand B.C. up to late 19th century.
The Gallery of Horyuji Treasures  Horyuji Treasures
Introducing ancient art from more than 300 items of the Horyuji Treasures, a group of buddhist art treasures originally donated to the Imperial family by the Horyuji temple.
Hyokeikan  Asian Gallery
5 exhibition rooms on the first floor are dedicated to art and antiquities of Asia, including those from China, the Korean peninsula, Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and Egypt.
