Arhats are enlightened adherents of Buddhism who have attained complete detachment from all worldly desires and remain in this realm as entrusted protectors and teachers of Buddhist teachings. The present exhibition showcases a diverse range of works depicting arhats, from the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279) to the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). To illustrate how the arhats possess transcendental abilities and characteristics, their depictions often render them in strange, otherworldly ways and usually show them performing miracles.
