Tokyo National Museum is celebrating its 150th anniversary. During its long history, the Museum accumulated an extensive collection, including many artworks of great artistic or historical value. Not all these works, however, are designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. From among these works, our curators have selected what they consider "Future National Treasures" for display in this gallery in 2022.
Draft for Wall Paintings for the Meeting Room of the Women's Quarters at Edo Castle
By Kanō Osanobu
Edo period, 19th century
Edo Castle was the shogun’s headquarters in Edo (Tokyo). This is the draft for wall paintings produced when Edo Castle's central palace was rebuilt after a fire in 1844. The draft was created by Kanō Osanobu (1796–1846), the shogun’s highest-ranked official painter. The wall paintings were intended for the palace’s innermost sanctums, namely the living quarters of the shogun’s wife and concubines. Though Edo Castle was later destroyed, this valuable work reveals how its interior once looked.
