During the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573–1603), families emerged that specialized in creating Noh masks over many generations. However, details surrounding this particular craft before this period are shrouded in mystery. There were makers who are regarded today as "legendary makers of Noh masks," but their background and details are virtually unknown and very few indisputably authentic masks by these legendary makers are extant.

This thematic exhibition is comprised of Noh masks that were purportedly created by these legendary makers. While the origin of these masks–namely, the names of their makers?needs to be verified, they each attest to their maker's high level of craftsmanship. We invite visitors to closely examine these Noh masks created by mysterious, legendary mask makers.
