Japanese Gallery (Honkan) Room T2
February 15, 2011 (Tue) - March 13, 2011 (Sun)
This is the 11th in a series of annual exhibitions showcasing conservation and restoration work conducted at the Tokyo National Museum. This year's exhibition includes 20 recently restored objects, chosen either as representative examples of their genre or for the uniquely specialized techniques used in their restoration. Genres selected this time include painting, sculpture, decorative arts, archaeological artifacts and historical documents.
The museum's mission is to maximize public access to cultural properties whilst at the same time preserving them for future generations. To achieve this, we constantly strive to improve exhibition and storage areas as well as methods of transporting cultural properties, and actively seek to ensure the longevity of objects through both conservation and restoration projects. Solving problems posed by materials or technology also plays an extremely important role in balancing the contradictory goals of display and preservation.
The objects and photo panels in this exhibition offer insight into the wide variety of conservation and restoration techniques used behind the scenes at the museum.
