The Thai people are said to have immigrated from southern China to central Indo-China peninsula around the 12th century, and they started to produce ceramic production around the same time at Si Satchanalai in central Thailand.

The main products from the Si Satchanalai kilns were underglaze iron wares and celadon wares. Excavation of the kiln site suggests that the production of underglaze iron ware began first, and this was followed a little later by celadon ware after the techniques were perfected.

Trade flourished during the 15th and 16th centuries, during the Ayutthaya period, and items were mass-produced for export. Si Satchanalai celadon ware features clear light blue-green glaze over powerful engraved designs.

Celadon wares with yellowish green glaze were produced at the Northern kilns around Chiang Mai.
