During the 140-year history of the Tokyo National Museum collection, the museum has received numerous artworks and artifacts from generous donors. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that quite a few of the works now on display in the museum are donations, beginning with items from the Yushima Seido exposition of 1872 to recent gifts from last year. The backgrounds of the donors range widely, from heads of former noble families and former daimyo (feudal lord) families to members of the general public, as well as people from foreign countries and their governments. At TNM, we express our gratitude to these donors in the Donors' Gallery (Room 20, Honkan), by listing their names.

As a part of the museum's 140th anniversary commemorative activities, this exhibition showcases a selection of masterpieces from these donations, particularly those designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Through this exhibition, we express our heartfelt thanks to the great generosity shown to our museum, as well as introduce the fact that donations play a significant role in our museum activities. At this moment in autumn, we hope our visitors enjoy the essence of the Tokyo National Museum collection, which has been enriched by the support of our donors and the people in Japan.
