    The Tokyo National Museum preserves and exhibits irreplaceable cultural and historical works from ancient times until the modern period, from Japan and other areas. The museum seeks to maintain the highest integrity to the collection of over 111,000 items, and at the same time, to make them widely available to the general public. With such a large number of items, however, it can still be difficult to fairly represent the cultures of various time periods.

    The museum's further aim is to increase and add diversity to the collections, since merely rotating the items on view is not enough to present a diverse and equal view of history. Every year, a search for important cultural objects of the highest quality is made. Last year the museum added a total of 173 cultural objects; purchasing 29 and receiving 144 as donations.

    This exhibit features 51 new pieces from last year's acquisitions, offering a fresh glimpse of Japan and the rest of the Orient's vivid culture and history.
