Chinese paintings and calligraphy were appreciated in accordance with aesthetics unique to Japan, and inspired creations by Japanese artists. Many works from the Song and Yuan dynasties were transmitted together with Buddhism and favored as the centerpieces of reception rooms and teahouses. The painters of the Edo period actively studied paintings of the Ming and Qing dynasties which followed the Yuan. After the modernization of the Meiji era, more diverse works of painting and calligraphy were introduced, and notable collections were accumulated by entrepreneurs. This exhibition features Chinese masterpieces cherished by the Japanese.
