In ancient Japan, bronze mirrors were considered symbols of authority with magical properties. This is a Japanese copy of a Chinese mirror that was decorated on the back with images of beasts and heavenly beings. People in Japan did not understand the meaning of these images. Here, they unintentionally combined them into a different design.
