The host of a tea gathering would have used this bowl to serve food to the guests. The bowl was made at the Karatsu kilns in southern Japan, which were strongly influenced by Korean pottery traditions. Tea masters admired the rustic, understated beauty of Karatsu ware, elevating it to one of Japan's most respected forms of pottery.
