Artisans at the Bizen kilns in western Japan utilized [yōhen] (“kiln effects”) to decorate their pottery. This serving dish was fired in a wood-burning kiln with other pottery placed on top. Ash fell onto the exposed areas and fused to the clay, resulting in a distinctive speckled effect.
