Masterpieces of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy

"Masterpieces of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy", shown annually in autumn features excellent works from the Museum's collection and pieces from other collections that are currently under the Museum's custody.

The painting section during the first half of the exhibition period will focus on Song dynasty works with masterpieces such as "Red and White Cotton Roses" by Li Di as well as "Dream Journey along the Xiao and Xiang Rivers". Also on display will be Liang Kai's "Sakyamuni Descending the Mountain after Asceticism", "Snowy Landscape" and "Snowy Landscape" attributed to Liang Kai, which will be grouped in a triptych. There will be two more of Liang Kai's ink paintings, "Li Bo Strolling" and "The Sixth Patriarch Cutting Bamboo" in addition to "Monkey" attributed to Mao Song. "Summer Landscape" attributed to Hu Zhifu (lent by Kuonji temple) will be shown after a long absence. These are some of the best Song dynasty paintings that have been preserved in Japan.

The focus of the second half will be on works dating to the Yuan and Ming dynasties, featuring "Han-shan and Shi-de" By Yintouluo, another "Han-shan and Shi-de" attributed to Yan Hui," Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons (Autumn)" by Lu Chi, "Siwan Landscapes" by Wen Pojen, as well as "Plants and Creatures" by Xu Wei, which is known as a masterpiece among the Takashima Collection of the Museum.

In the calligraphy section, Tang dynasty masterpieces such as "Jieshidiao Youlan vol.V, Musical Score for the Qin Zither", "Guwen Shangshu, The Text of Ancient Chinese Rulers" written in an ancient script style and "Collected Writings of Wang Bo" as well as "Writings for the Tablets of Buddhist Temples" by Zhang Jizhi from the Southern Song dynasty (lent by Tofukuji temple) will be featured. Excellent calligraphy by men of letters from the Ming and Qing dynasties such as "Poem in Running-cursive Script" by Zhang Ruitu will be also on display. The calligraphy will be shown throughout the duration of the exhibition.
