Features of the Japanese Gallery (Honkan)

  • The Japanese Gallery is the most visited gallery at the Tokyo National Museum. Seating is available in almost all galleries, and eating and drinking are allowed in the area in front of the vending machines in the basement. It can become crowded when there is a special exhibition in Room T5.

[Sound information]

  • Sounds echo in the Japanese Gallery due to its steel-reinforced concrete structure and high ceilings. Therefore, it can get noisy when it is crowded. The interactive exhibition spaces and the museum shop can be especially loud. Faint sounds can be heard from the air-conditioning and other equipment. Regular and special announcements are made through speakers installed throughout the building.

[Light information]

  • To protect the artworks, the exhibition rooms are kept dimly lit. However, brightness varies according to the room, as the lighting is adjusted to suit each exhibit. In contrast, the interactive exhibition spaces are bright, as they are well-lit with many lights. Some areas outside the exhibition rooms receive natural light from the ceiling and windows. There are digital displays in some places in the building.

Regular announcements

  • At 12:00, a chime will sound to indicate that it is noon.
  • At 4:30 pm, an announcement will inform visitors that the museum will close in 30 minutes.
  • At 5:00 pm, an announcement will inform visitors that the museum has closed.

(Note) The times for the announcements made 30 minutes before closing and at closing will differ on days when the museum is open late.

Lounge

There is multiple-person seating here that provides a view of the garden outside. Visitors can step out onto the terrace from the lounge. (Note) The terrace may be closed at times.
Drinking water is available from the water cooler. Beverages in lidded containers are allowed. It can become crowded during busy periods.

There are single chairs and tables here that face the garden outside. Beverages in lidded contaners are allowed, but eating is not permitted. It can become crowded during busy periods.

Area in front of the vending machines

There are seats here so visitors can sit down to eat and drink. The vending machines offer beverages and ice cream. It can become crowded during busy periods.

Entrance

This area tends to be crowded, as the information desk is located here. Sounds echo off the high ceiling, so it can become especially noisy when crowded.

Lounge

The terrace doors make a sound when they are opened and closed. The air curtains of the automatic doors also make a sound when people enter and exit from the adjacent exhibition room. It becomes noisy when it is crowded.

Room T3

There is a large interactive digital display in the room that emits sounds. As this is an interactive space, it will become noisy when it is crowded.

Room T4

There is a digital display in the room that emits sounds. As this is an interactive space, it will become noisy when it is crowded.

Room 19

This is an interactive space, so it will become noisy when it is crowded.

Area in front of the Imperial Lounge

The open ceiling design lets sounds such as people's footsteps and voices from the entrance and stairway echo easily, making it noisy when crowded.

Area in front of the vending machines

The vending machines make some noise. Eating and drinking are allowed here, so it will become noisy when it is crowded.

Room 17

Videos are shown on digital displays in the room.

Room T3

A large interactive digital display brightens the room. Videos are also shown on digital displays in the room.

Entrance

Natural light shines in from the entrance, ceiling, and windows. There is a large digital display providing facility information on the museum shop side. The lamps on the balustrade of the large staircase might feel too bright.

Museum Shop

The shop is relatively bright. Indirect lighting is used.
