In March of 2007 the Tokyo National Museum was bequeathed twenty-one objects, including Asian paintings and sculptures, by Dr. Yamamoto Tatsuro, a distinguished scholar of Asian history and recipient of the Order of Cultural Merits. Dr. Yamamoto was professor at the University of Tokyo from 1949 and at International Christian University (ICU) from 1971, appointed as a member of Japan Academy in 1966, named as a Person of Cultural Merits in 1976, and awarded the Order of Cultural Merits in 1998. He passed away in 2001. He was a leading researcher concerning the history of South and Southeast Asia, but his interest further extended to India and China, and eventually to the rest of the world.

Prior to the recent donation, Dr. Yamamoto's family presented the museum with thirteen Japanese and Chinese works of art including one National Treasure, three Important Cultural Properties, and two Important Art Objects in 2001. They consisted of twelve objects that were collected by Dr. Yamamoto's father, Mr. Yamamoto Tatsuo, and one owned by Mrs. Yamamoto Tatsuro. The 2007 gift consists of works collected by Dr. Yamamoto himself, and they are from various regions and eras that span his area of research, with a focus on Southeast Asia.

We are pleased to present this thematic display to commemorate the donation. We hope that the donated works will serve to enhance interest in Asian history and art.
