June 27, 2023 (Tue) - August 6, 2023 (Sun)Confucianism, a Chinese philosophy that emphasizes respect and social order, strongly influenced Japanese society. Even the Tokyo National Museum and the University of Tsukuba trace their origins to an important Confucian temple in Tokyo, the Yushima Seidō.
Because of their shared origins, these two institutions are home to the twenty-one paintings comprising the series Great Confucian Masters and Sages. These paintings, which are important works by the painter Kanō Sansetsu (1589–1651), are being displayed together for first time since they were divided between the Museum and the University.
The exhibition is also presenting a diverse collection of artworks and records related to Confucianism and the Yushima Temple, ranging from accounts of ceremonies to painted screens and ritual objects.
