April 25, 2023 (Tue) - June 18, 2023 (Sun)
Bugaku is a performing art that originated on the Asian continent and arrived in Japan in the late 8th century. It was performed at the imperial court and during religious events. The costumes used in Bugaku are made in traditional styles influenced by the imperial court.
There are various types of Bugaku performances, such as sahō (dances of the left), which originated in China and usually feature red costumes. In contrast, uhō (dances of the right) originated in Korea and typically feature blue costumes. This exhibition focuses on costumes from dōgaku, or “children’s dances,” which, like other Bugaku performances, feature elegant colors and designs influenced by court culture.
