Hasegawa Tōhaku (1539–1610) is one of the most iconic painters of the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573–1603), a time when samurai warlords fought for control of Japan. In this work, he avoids the prominent outlines typical of ink painting, using only delicate gradations to depict a windswept pine grove with hazy light seeping through the mist. He created this atmospheric scene through his mastery of Chinese-style ink painting, breathing new life into the classic subject matter of a pine grove.
