During the Kanpyō era (889–898), the Empress Dowager Hanshi (833–900) organized a poetry contest featuring some of the best poets of her day. Over a century later, the regent Fujiwara no Yorimichi (992–1074) commissioned ten outstanding calligraphers to inscribe the poems of this contest onto ten scrolls, but the project was abandoned halfway through. Nonetheless, this draft include some of the finest kana calligraphy of the Heian period (794–1192), on par with the celebrated Mount Kōya Fragments of the Collection of Japanese Poems Ancient and Modern.
