Some ink paintings were brushed onto satin-weave silk. The luster of the silk gives a distinctive look to the ink gradations. When ink paintings are executed on paper decorated with scattered pieces of gold leaf, the gold brings out the subtle shades of the ink. Ink paintings on satin and decorated paper became especially popular from the 16th century among scholar-artists. Here we present a selection of them.
