November 28, 2017 (Tue) - January 28, 2018 (Sun)Tokyo National Museum holds documents and other objects that reveal Japan’s history. This collection is comprised primarily of objects from the government of the shogun in the Edo period (1603–1868). Since the establishment of the museum in 1872 (Meiji 5), the collection grew through expositions and surveys of cultural properties that the museum was involved in. This exhibition features the history of Japanese culinary culture revealed through cookbooks from the Edo period. Also included in the lineup – from the museum’s large collection of photographs taken from the end of the Edo period and throughout the Meiji era – are early photographs of the museum, as well as temples and shrines, such as Kan’eiji temple, with historical connections to the museum.
