The ukiyo-e genre of pictures developed as portrayals of people’s daily life through individual paintings, as well as mass-produced woodblock prints. This exhibit features seasonal themes, beginning with Enjoying the Cool at Sumida River, by an artist from the Miyagawa school, which specialized in ukiyo-e paintings. Themes for the ukiyo-e prints on view include the tanabata star festival, fireworks, mosquito nets, or cooling off, together with clematis and other summer flowers.
