Blindfold Games: Mitate (Parody) of Yuranosuke at the Ichiriki Teahouse, By Chokosai Eisho, Edo period, 18th century (Important Art Object)
Japanese Gallery (Honkan) Room 10
November 26, 2014 (Wed) - December 23, 2014 (Tue)
The museum will display winter genre scenes and the winter section of Utagawa Hiroshige’s series, One Hundred Famous Places of Edo. Works based on The Treasury of Loyal Retainers, which became associated with the New Year, will also be exhibited. The 47 Loyal Retainers’ raid, during which they avenged their master’s death, became well known among the people of Edo (present-day Tokyo). This was due to the Kanatehon version of the tale, which was performed in the kabuki theater. An eleven-part series by Katsukawa Shunei (1762-1819), as well as other prints based on this play will be on display.
Current exhibit includes:
100 Famous Places of Edo: View from the Top of Tenjinzaka Slope at Yushima, By Utagawa Hiroshige, Edo period, dated 1856
The Treasury of Loyal Retainers: Act 1, By Katsukawa Shunei, Edo period, dated 1807
Blindfold Games: Mitate (Parody) of Yuranosuke at the Ichiriki Teahouse, By Chokosai Eisho, Edo period, 18th century (Important Art Object)
