In 2012, Ms. Emori Sanae donated ukiyo-e woodblock prints related to the Chinese tale of heroes, The Water Margin, to the Tokyo National Museum. From these works, this exhibition displays 38 prints selected from the series, One Hundred and Eight Heroes from the Chinese Tale, The Water Margin, which is known as the work that made Utagawa Kuniyoshi famous and which created a boom in popularity for The Water Margin at the end of the Edo period (1603 - 1868). The exhibition also features a triptych by Utagawa Sadahide that depicts a panorama of Mount Liang (the heroes’ stronghold).
