Actor Segawa Kikunojo III in the Play "Shakkyo", By Torii Kiyonaga, Edo period, dated 1789
Japanese Gallery (Honkan) Room 10
September 18, 2013 (Wed) - October 14, 2013 (Mon)
This exhibition features works of Torii Kiyonaga (1752 - 1815), who lead the world of ukiyo-e during the Tenmei era (1781 - 1789) in the Edo period. Producing Kabuki-themed paintings was the Torii family's specialty. In this exhibition, Kiyonaga's variety of works on the Kabuki theatrical theme include a narrow print-sized portrait of an actor, a print of a scene in which musicians perform on stage, prints depicting private lives of actors, and stage cast lists. Among Kiyonaga's ukiyo-e prints portraying beautiful women, medium-sized color woodblock prints will be exhibited. They were produced in the period during which Kiyonaga's artistic style was formed, and have a style observed in early works of Isoda Koryusai, another notable ukiyo-e artist. Other works on this theme on exhibit include prints from Genre Scenes with "Brocades of the East" (Beautiful women of Edo), which is one of Kiyonaga's representative series, and a print from Ten Genre Scenes, which was among his final series depicting beautiful women. Also on display are votive tablets and paintings, including those painted on fan surfaces, to provide an overview of Kiyonaga's work.
