This exhibition celebrates the reopening of the Toyokan with a display of masterpieces of Chinese painting and calligraphy. Many paintings from the Song and Yuan dynasties were imported to Japan since the medieval Muromachi period, some of which now form the core of the Chinese painting collection at the Tokyo National Museum. These works are not only significant in the history of Chinese painting, but also constantly had great influence on the development of Japanese culture. The second period of this exhibition focuses on masterpieces of painting on Taoist and Buddhist themes.
