On the theme of the New Year, this exhibition focuses on works depicting new-year scenes, including specially-commissioned prints, or surimono, which were distributed at new-year gatherings and other events in the Edo period. Examples of surimono on display include Road to Enoshima by Totoya Hokkei, which portrays the pilgrimage to the island of Enoshima (Kanagawa prefecture), an event that only occurs in the Year of the Snake. In addition, there are paintings by Utagawa Hiroshige and bijinga portraits of beautiful women from series such as Young Women of the Pleasure District in New Year's Fashion by Isoda Koryusai and Hundred Beauties at Famous Places of Edo by Utagawa Toyokuni III, which are representative works of those artists.
