August 30, 2022 (Tue) - October 23, 2022 (Sun)
The Konparu troupe was one of Japan’s oldest noh theater companies and owned many ancient noh masks. Based in Nara, this troupe was patronized by the powerful samurai warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598) and thus accumulated a large collection of noh costumes from this time.
In two rotations, this exhibition explores noh culture from before the 20th century through masks and costumes passed down by the Konparu troupe. The first rotation presents masks and costumes from Hideyoshi’s time in the late 16th century.
