This picture scroll depicts a scene from the Heiji Rebellion that took place in the mid-12th century. It shows Emperor Nijō escaping from the inner court and fleeing to the Rokuhara residence of the samurai warlord Taira no Kiyomori. The rich expressions of the human figures make it one of the great picture scrolls of the medieval period.
