The Kofun period (ca. 3rd–7th century) saw the dissemination of funerary facilities and implements that originated in the Kinki region. This region, to which Kyoto and Osaka belong today, was the political center of Japan at the time. Rural areas, on the other hand, developed unique burial implements such as Jōsō-style stone headrests. Decorated with small, flower-shaped stone ornaments, these headrests for the deceased were made and used mainly in the eastern part of the Kanto region, near present-day Tokyo.
