The Noh play The Reed Cutter is a love story between a husband and wife in the Naniwa Region set in springtime. The wife, a successful servant of a nobleman in the capital, appears in a beautiful karaori costume. The husband, who lives in Nanba and loses his wife, first appears in a humble mizugoromo costume, but later changes into a magnificent hitatare he receives from his wife. The highlight of the play is a scene in which the husband sells reed while singing and dancing.
