The art known as ukiyo-e was created for and portrayed the common people of the Edo period (1603–1868). It consists mainly of prints that reflect their interests, passions, and leisure activities. Seasonal themes were also very popular in this genre of art. In celebration of the cherry-blossom season, this gallery currently includes ukiyo-e with scenes of places in Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto celebrated for their blooming cherry trees. Images of popular Kabuki actors and courtesans as well as bird-and-flower prints featuring cherry blossom are also included.
Current exhibit includes:
Asukayama, By Kuwagata Keisai, Edo period, 19th century
Handsome Youth on Horseback under Cherry Blossom Tree, By Okumura Masanobu, Edo period, 18th century
