Rare textile fragments brought to Japan from Yuan (1271–1368) and Ming (1368–1644) dynasty China were referred to as meibutsu gire (exceptional textile fragments). As time went on, however, the definition of meibutsu gire became increasingly vague. To clarify the meaning, the feudal lord and tea practitioner Matsudaira Harusato (1751–1818), using various albums and the records kept by tea practitioners, compiled the Prized Textiles section of the book, Record of Exceptional Objects from Past and Present, which was woodblock-printed in color and published in 1789.
Current exhibit includes:
Album of Antique Textiles, Ming-Qing dynasty, 17th - 18th century
