Ukiyo-e portray the lives of ordinary people in the Edo period (1603–1868), originating in genre paintings on folding screens and other formats. Eventually, woodblock printing developed to suit mass production, and carving and printing techniques became sophisticated for multicolor nishiki-e prints to evolve. This exhibit features various prints including monochromes of ink, lacquer, and vermillion, centering on print series themed on courtesans and landscapes, adding pieces with tastes that match the early summer season.
