Chinese intellectuals, when it came to their own portraits, liked to be portrayed fishing quietly, or engrossed in reading, or perhaps lost in thought in the mountains. This is because they did not want to be remembered by future generations as people who seized fortune and power, adorning themselves with luxurious decorations. Rather, they hoped to be remembered as literati who clothed themselves in elegance and refinement.
Current exhibit includes:
Water-shield Gatherer, By Dou Cishan, Qing dynasty, dated 1712 (Gift of Mr. Takashima Kikujiro)
Sound of Stream Among Bamboo, By Li Shida, Ming dynasty, 16th - 17th century (Important Cultural Property)
Portrait of Bao Shichen, By Wu Xizai, Qing dynasty, 19th century (Gift of Mr. Takashima Kikujiro)
Literary Gathering, By Yu Zhiding, Qing dynasty, 17th century (Gift of Mr. Takashima Kikujiro)
