The Ming dynasty saw the rise of lively economic activities in the cities of Jiangnan. Many luxury items appeared on the market, and people’s interests towards culture increased accordingly. In response to these trends, painters came to portray extravagant palaces, lavish vessels, cultural activities in the gardens, dressed-up maids and children, and the bustle of the streets. They followed elegant painting styles that were popular in the Song-dynasty court, adopting timely themes in a classical setting. In this we see their interest towards the cultures of their own time.
