Japanese tea masters prized imported Chinese ceramics for their rarity and craftsmanship. This piece was created in China over 700 years ago and shipped to Japan, where it was repurposed as a container for matcha (powdered green tea). It was later acquired by the businessman and tea master Matsunaga Yasuzaemon (1875–1971), who gifted it to the museum.
