This chapter from the [Lotus Sutra] promises blessings to all who recite and copy this sacred Buddhist writing. Japan’s nobility commissioned many ornately decorated copies of the sutra as acts of devotion. This example features gold and silver decorations that have elegantly tarnished over the centuries.
