This part introduces burial items of tombs from about the 2nd century BC to the 8th century AD. Mingqi are models of various implements and equipment, such as cooking stoves, vehicles including carriages and oxcarts, and even toilets. Tomb figures are models of humans who served a master, such as servants and entertainers. The objects on display present the idealized lifestyle that people of this time entrusted to mingqi and tomb figures.

Chinese Textiles: Prized Textile Fragments of the Maeda Clan in Kaga

The Tokyo National Museum has a collection of about 80 textile fragments that were formerly owned by the prosperous Maeda clan, feudal lords of Kaga domain (now Ishikawa prefecture). These fragments were in fact luxury textiles imported to Japan from China. They were used by Japanese practitioners of the tea ceremony to make pouches for tea caddies (containers for holding powdered green tea) and to decorate the mountings of scrolls that were hung up in tea rooms. They were also highly prized by these practitioners because the techniques with which they were woven could not be replicated in Japan. The Maeda clan spent vast sums of its wealth accumulating these fragments, which are now on display so that visitors may experience the essence of Chinese textiles that were so highly prized in Japan.

In the 2nd century BC, Chinese tombs were not simply holes in the ground. They developed to have walls and ceilings, with a structure almost like underground mansions. Tombs also appeared that had shrines built above ground for the bereaved families to perform rituals. Particularly in Shandong province and southern Henan province, sturdy stone was favored for making the tombs and shrines, with the stone surfaces used for carving images. Many of these stone bas-reliefs were created until the second half of the 2nd century in the Eastern Han dynasty.

Chinese Painting: Insects, Birds, and Animals in Paintings

Paintings of plants and insects from the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) feature symmetric compositions. Bright colors are used for plants and flowers, and insects playing among them are vividly detailed. In the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), court painters produced works of meticulously rendered flowers and birds, as well as moving animals. The works from this period are noted for diagonal compositions, similar to those often seen in paintings from the Southern Song (1127–1279), with expressively defined landscapes in the background. Shen Quan of the following Qing dynasty integrated the styles of flower-and-bird and animal paintings of the Ming together with techniques from the Northern Song (960–1127) that were used for trees, mountains, and rocks. The contrast of light and dark in his painting presents a strong uniqueness. Constant studies of the classics and the pursuit for novel artistic expression led, to rich development.

Chinese Calligraphy: Modern Chinese Calligraphy

The Stele school reached its heyday during the Daoguang era (1821–50), and its pinnacle through the accomplishments of Zhao Zhiqian (1829–84). Initially, many of the Stele school calligraphers were influenced by writings such as the regular script of the Northern Wei dynasty, but later, those inspired by ancient characters seen in the inscriptions on bronzes began to work in a wide variety of styles. Thus the cult of Wang Xizhi, worshipped for over 1600 years, had finally came to an end through the emergence of the Stele school. The Stele school maintained its power into the Republic period, which began in 1911. The calligraphy and theories of the Stele school were introduced to Japan by figures such as Yang Shoujing (1839–1915) and Kang Youwei (1858–1927), and influenced trends in Japanese calligraphy. This exhibition is an overview of calligraphy in China, from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century.

Lacquerware is a form of decorative art made by applying lacquer sap on vessels and utensils, a practice which developed widely in China, Japan, Korea, and the Southeast Asian regions, in techniques and designs unique to each area. China, in particular, has a history of lacquerware of as long as 7000 years.

Khmer Sculpture

This section introduces sculptures from Khmer, with a focus on stone statues from the Angkor period (9th-13th century). The Tokyo National Museum collection of Khmer sculptures, which are distinguished in both quality and quantity, was acquired in 1944 through an exchange project with the research institute l'École francaise d'Extrême-Orient.

Gilt Bronze Statues from Southeast Asia

This part focuses on Southeast Asian gilt bronze statues of gods and Buddhist deities from the 7th to 13th century. The statues are made using the lost-wax casting process, and therefore they have common qualities in their plasticity and smoothness of form.

Indian Miniature Paintings

Indian miniature paintings established a uniquely meticulous, colorful, and passionate style, with various painting schools. An appeal of the paintings to viewers is the abundance of elements vividly contained inside each picture, such as myths, music, and nature.

Orchid Island is situated off the southeastern coast of the main island of Taiwan. The ethnic group of Tao (Yami) people, who live on this island, are said to have come across the sea from the northern Philippines. This exhibit presents the prayers and wisdom of the Tao people who have lived together with the sea on their isolated island.
