This shrine was intended for export to Europe, where it would have been hung on the wall for private worship. The doors are richly decorated in Japanese lacquer, gold, silver, and seashell. Scholars believe the oil painting was created by a Spanish artist in the early 1600s after the shrine arrived in Europe.
