The Twelve Divine Generals are guardian deities who serve Yakushi, the buddha of healing. In this depiction, they have animal figures on their heads, as they were associated with the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Their realism and dynamic poses show influence from the master sculptor Unkei, who pioneered a new sculptural mode in the Kamakura period (1192–1333).
