This painting of Mount Fuji dates to the late 1400s, a time of political turmoil and civil war in Japan. The Zen monk Shijun Tokuyō gifted the painting to the samurai warlord Ashikaga Masauji (1462–1531). In the inscription, Shijun compares the warlord to the towering mountain, claiming that he will defeat his rivals and bring peace to the land.
