1900년에 황태자(훗날 다이쇼 천황)의 결혼을 기념하여 계획되었고, 1909년에 개관한 일본 최초의 본격적인 미술관입니다. 조사이어 콘더의 제자이자 동궁어소(지금의 영빈관) 등의 건물도 담당했던 궁정 건축가 가타야마 도쿠마가 설계를 맡았습니다. 중앙과 좌우에 아름다운 돔 지붕을 올리고, 상층부 외벽에는 제도용구, 공구, 악기 등을 모티브로 한 부조가 새겨져 있습니다. 메이지시대 말의 서양풍 건축을 대표하는 건물로서 1978년에 중요문화재로 지정되었습니다.

High-resolution facsimiles of all thirty scrolls of master painter Itō Jakuchū’s Colorful Realm of Living Beings （National Treasure） paintings will be displayed at the Tokyo National Museum’s Hyokeikan galleries this spring. The facsimiles are the result of a joint research project for the utilization of high-quality reproductions of cultural properties by the National Center for the Promotion of Cultural Properties and Canon Inc. The works will be on public display to celebrate the completion of the project and in anticipation of the grand reopening of the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan.
